How to Paint Solid Wood Doors

Sometimes when you buy solid wood doors, they aren’t the exact color you’d like them to be. But it’s easier and cheaper to get them unfinished and paint them the way you’d like, especially if you have a specific color in mind that’s going to match a room, hallway, or the front of your house. There are a few easy steps to painting your doors whatever color you need and having them look great.

First, remove the door knobs and hinges to make sure you don’t get any paint on them accidentally.  Then take the door off its hinges (if it’s already installed) and lay it across two sawhorses so you can paint easily. If it’s a raw surface, apply a coat of primer and let it dry.

Apply one or two coats of semigloss or glossy. This kind of paint is very durable and will be the easiest to clean. And doors definitely get dirty with finger prints pretty fast, so you want easy! Paint in even strokes. A tapered end brush may be the best brush to use to get the best results. Don’t use a roller, it often comes out uneven. By hand with a brush, you have more control.

Once your solid wood doors are painted, leave to dry. They’ll be ready to be re-installed by the next day!
