Shop for Wood Doors by Home Style

wood doorsNot everyone has the flair for good design. I know quite a few people who are in need of a home intervention. Most people do alright with the basics. They know not to mix certain colors together or certain patterns. They may not know the right things to put together, but they can easily spot what does not go together. Their homes are nice, nothing fantastic though. You want a fantastic home.

But that’s why we have interior designers and of course the shop by home style guide on Doors4Home.com. The most you have to know is what style your home is and they will suggest wood doors that will match beautiful with your home. Even if you’re not completely sure, they describe characteristics of each style so you know exactly what to purchase. For example, a Colonial home has grand entryways. Therefore, they are typically seen with glass doors, sidelites, and square or arched transoms. For Cape Cod homes, entrances are simple with just a single door. For a more modern look, you can add sidelites and transoms.

See how easy it is? It’s as simple as scrolling and reading! Now you can find the perfect entry doors for any style of home.

You should pick a door based on your needs and looks. It is going in your home after all! But did you know that wood doors are actually energy efficient? Wood is actually one of the best insulators, for both heat and electricity.

The doors from Doors4Home.com are made from a piece of solid wood, ensuring that there are no cracks, thin filler wood, or any other inferior milling techniques that can cause warm air to escape in the winter or cool air in the summer. Then you won’t have to worry about other means of insulation. You can also count on them being extremely durable. Their solid wood doors can be trimmed to fit any existing door frame. As long as the doors are sealed properly, they can last for over 100 years! That’s pretty impressive if you ask me!

A New Paint Job for an Entry Door

entry doorsSometimes we can’t be bothered taking on large projects to fix up the home, either because of cost or we just don’t have the skills or patience. But if you’re looking for an easy DIY project that won’t cost you too much and is easy enough for anyone to perform, try a new coat of paint on the front door. It can breathe new life to entry doors!

Start by using a screwdriver to remove the door and then all hardware on the door, including the knocker, peephole, and doorknob. Clean the door entirely and allow it to dry before you delve into the paint bucket. Prep the door first by patching up any cracks with quick-drying wood filler. After it dries, sand the filler so it is flush with the door.

Now we’re ready to prime, unless the current paint is in very good condition. But if you are switching to a darker color, then use primer regardless of the previous paint condition. Prime every inch of the door, otherwise it will absorb moisture. Let it dry completely. If there are still cracks, fill with caulk, let it dry, and re-prime the area. Begin painting with an angled sash brush, working from the top panels down. Use a roller to pain any raised panels. The darker you want the color, the more paint you will need for wood doors.

Door Wreaths: Yay or Nay?

entry doorsDoor wreaths are a fairly common decorative item. Women across the country love to change the door wreath every season. There is one full of orange leaves and pinecones for fall, pine and red berries for winter, and brightly colored flowers for spring.  It’s festive and fun, but some might be worried that a wreath is hiding the beauty of entry doors. You’ve spent so much money to find one that is beautiful, one that expresses the design of your home’s style.

It’s understandable, no doubt. But how about a compromise? Only place wreaths around the holidays. It’s the same as putting lights on your room and a giant Santa sleigh on your front lawn. You’re not diminishing the beauty of your own, you’re adding to it! It’s a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit.

A beautifully made wreath will make a wonderful addition to entry doors, giving your home even more personality. Your home should be a reflection of you, both inside and out. You can find interesting wreaths at home good stores or you can unleash your inner Martha Stewart and create you own.

Before Installing French Doors

French doorsFrench doors are a beautiful addition to any home. They provide privacy while still allowing for a visual connection between two rooms. They can be used as patio doors or as interior doors. But before you start gathering up your tool belt, there are some steps you need to take beforehand.

Not only do you need to correctly measure the space, you have to measure the radius of the swing. There should be no furniture within the planned path of the door. Next you need to measure the jamb depth of the opening. The doors need to fit inside that depth. Newer homes should have an easier fit with a standard French door size. For older homes, you may have to install a new jamb inside the opening. If you need a standard door, you can easily purchase pre-hung door kits.

If you’re purchasing French doors for a patio, make sure you purchase entry French doors so they have lock on them. For security reasons, you should purchase ones with a three-point locking system. This will lock the door to the head jamb and the sill instead of to each other.

Look for beautiful French doors when you shop at Doors4Home.com.

Troubleshooting Doors That Won’t Close

solid wood doorsWood doors that won’t close can not only be a real pain, it isn’t safe! The last thing you want are entry doors that are giving you problems, but no matter if it’s an interior or exterior door, the door needs to be fixed right away. There are a few reasons it could be having issues but it’s not too difficult to troubleshoot and fix the problem.

First, see if the latch bolt is sticking. If it is, all you need to do is lubricate it with some silicone. If that’s not the problem, use a level to see if the door was installed properly. It needs to be a perfect fit. Adjusting the hinges is the easy solution. But if the door is hung correctly, it’s time to check the strike plate in the door jamb. Check out the wear marks to see if it’s out of alignment. If it’s only slightly misaligned, you can use a file along the edge of the hole to make it bigger. If it’s really off, you can replace the strike plate with a larger one.

That should solve the problem so you can finally shut the door all the way and have it stay shut!

Weatherproofing Interior Doors

interior doorsWith winter coming up, the house is about to plunge into a deep freeze. What often cools down many houses are drafty doors and windows. The space between the wood doors and the floor are the perfect opportunity to chill the home, meaning you have to crank up the heat, causing your heating bill to rise. Thankfully there are easy solutions that will help you keep your home much warmer.

An easy solution is to use vinyl or rubber weather stripping. Simply fasten it to the sides and top of the door casing. Secure with nails or staples. A vinyl gasket will also get the job done. Not only is it durable, it’s inexpensive. After winter’s brutal reign is over, you can just tear it off. No fuss, no muss.

The biggest draft comes from the bottom of wood doors. You can purchase what is called a sweep to is secured to the bottom of the door. They are especially good for uneven floors. You can purchase sweeps that are either nailed to the bottom or stick with adhesive. They will keep out the cold and save you a bundle on heating bills.

Locks and Latches for Your Entry Doors

solid wood doorsIf you’re installing brand new wood doors in your home, you have to purchase the proper door hardware. That includes locks and latches which allow the doors to securely close. Most interior doors just use a mortise catch, with the main body of the latch attached to the edge of the door. The catch will meet the plate which you attach to the door frame, or door jamb.

For all entry doors and interior doors leading into bedrooms and bathrooms, there will also be door locks for privacy. The most common types of lock sets include mortise lock sets, cylinder and tubular locks, and unit locks. Cylinder locks are the most popular among residential home. In addition to the typical door lock, many also install a deadbolt for even more security. For doors leading to closets and other rooms that don’t need a lock, choose passage latches. When making a purchase for locks and latches, ensure that you know which was your swings so you can correctly install the hardware.

Other important hardware to remember are hinges and handles or door knobs. Hinges have to match up with the weight and function of the door. Interior doors typically have two or three hinges. Three or four should be used on entry doors.
